Gypsy: A Musical Fable, loosely based on then-striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee's 1957 memoir, was written in 1959. A hit upon its release, the musical would go on to be described as the "greatest musical of all time" due to its ability to dive into the complexities of the mother-daughter relationship at the heart of the story. Antonio Banderas directs the Madrid production in Spain's first staging of a theatrical classic. Musical theater star Marta Ribera and libretto Arthur Laurents lead the production that features music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, musical direction by Arturo Díez Boscovich, translation of the libretto by María Ruiz, translation of lyrics by Roser Batalla, and choreography by Borja Rueda, as well as three of the original choreographies by Jerome Robbins (West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof).
Storyline
It's the roaring 20s and America is on the cusp of a creative revolution: burlesque and vaudeville are breaking new ground. Two young hopefuls spend their days practicing and performing under the determined eyes of their mother, Rose. Stardom, ever elusive, proves to be a harder feat, but Rose is no quitter and will make her daughters stars - no matter the cost. Loosely inspired by 1920s and 1930s America, when vaudeville and burlesque were born, Arthur Laurents’s landmark musical explores the world of show business with humor, heart, and sophistication.
